What is the Nintendo DS?

The DS is the latest handheld games console from Nintendo, following on from the Gameboy Advance. The Nintendo DS Lite is the redesigned version of the DS, which is available in three colours - Black, Pink and Silver. The DS features two screens, touch screen technology, built in wi-fi, stereo sound and a microphone. Mutli-player games are also supported, with Download Play. Download Play allows gamers to play together while only using one game cartridge, as long as the DS consoles are within 100ft of each other. Another feature which uses the wireless capabilities of the DS is PictoChat. PictoChat comes pre-installed on all the Nintendo DS consoles. Up to 16 people within the wireless range of the DS can communicate through chat rooms, either entering text or sending pictures.

As well as housing the latest DS games, the Nintendo DS also takes any Gameboy advance game.

What is the PS3?

The PS3, or PlayStation 3 to use its official title, is the latest games console from Sony, launched in 2007 as the follow up console to the PlayStation and PlayStation 2. The PS3 comes in several configurations, with the primary difference being the size of the hard drive apart from the 60GB model which also has an internal Wi-Fi card.

To compete with the online gaming community the PS3 launched the PlayStation Network, which allows PS3 owners to play against each other online, and download additional content for their console. The online experience for the PS3 console was further enhanced in 2008 with the introduction of the PlayStation Home community. PlayStation Home is an extension to the PlayStation Network, where gamers can create their own online world and avatars. In this online world gamers can meet, play games against each other, and share multimedia stored on their consoles.

The PS3, as well as a gaming console, is also a multimedia centre, featuring a Blu-ray disc drive and HDMI connections.

There a number of enhanced controllers available for the PS3 which make game playing even more fun. Examples of this include the Rock Band Wireless Guitar, Rock Band Drum Set and the ever popular microphone and dance mat!

What is the Nintendo Wii?

The Nintendo Wii is the latest games console from Nintendo, launched in 2006 as the successor to the GameCube. The Wii distinguishes itself from the other games consoles on the market with its unique wireless control – the Wii Remote. The Wii Remote can be used as pointing device, as well as a standard game controller. Since its launch the Nintendo Wii has proved itself as the most popular games console of its generation, outselling both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 by a considerable margin.

The Wii Remote can be extended by the Nunchuk, which is connected to the remote to offer two-handed gaming. Other controllers include the Wii Zapper Gun and the Wii Wheel. The Virtual Console channel where games can be downloaded allows gamers to access classic Nintendo games for their Wii, including Super Mario Bros, The Princess of Zelda and Donkey Kong.

The latest Wii development has seen the launch of the Wii Balance Board. The Wii Balance Board, which is shaped like a normal body scale, contains multiple pressure sensors to enable it to interact with the Wii Fit game that reports on a gamers centre of gravity and BMI. The Wii Balance Board is connected to the Wii as a game controller, and currently is only compatible with the Wii Fit game which allows users to exercise and perform yoga using the help of their console.

What is the Xbox 360?

The Xbox 360 is the latest games consoles from Microsoft, launched in 2005 as a follow up to the original Xbox. The Xbox comes in three different versions - Arcade, Premium and Elite. Arcade is the most basic package which includes a wireless controller and 256MB of memory. The Premium package comes with all the features of the Arcade, as well as 20GB Hard Drive. The Elite package is a further enhancement, featuring a 120GB Hard Drive, and a stylish matte black finish.

One of the key features of the Xbox 360 is the Xbox Live gaming service. Xbox Live allows gamers to go online and talk to friends, create profiles, download games and play against other gamers online.
